The 2022/2023 EMKP Call for Applications is now open!

We are pleased to announce that the  the EMKP is offering two types of grants for this round of applications:

The EMKP Documentation Grant funds the documentation of material knowledge systems that are currently under threat and in danger of disappearing. This includes knowledge systems associated with the making, use, repair and re-purposing of material objects, as well as spaces, architecture, performances, and environments. To be eligible for this grant, the knowledge system proposed must still be actively pursued, or practiced within living memory of the knowledge holders.

EMKP Documentation Grant can come in one of two sizes:

Small grants can last up to one year, with a maximum award of £20,000. Small grants are intended for projects which focus on a specific material practice, and which are relatively limited in scope. Early career applicants or researchers conducting pilot work to establish the nature and extent of a material knowledge system are encouraged to apply.

Large grants can last up to two years, with a maximum award of £100,000. These are suitable for more intensive projects, where a greater diversity of documentation is proposed. We would normally expect the applicant to be part of a larger team of researchers, managing multiple strands of work over a longer period.

The EMKP Legacy Digitisation Grant funds the digitisation of collections and research records relating to already concluded work on material knowledge that is either currently under threat, or has previously been endangered. This includes, among others, fieldnotes/ works on paper, photographs and negatives, videos/reels, audio recordings and physical objects. The endangered condition of the records themselves, for example due to poor preservation, uncertain storage future, and or likely disposal/destruction, will also be taken into consider.

The call for applications for both of these grants is 30 January 2023. Please visit the Grants page on our website for more information and guidelines on how to apply. Additional queries can be directed to the EMKP Team, using the email emkp@britishmuseum.org.

Thank you for your support of the EMKP. We look forward to reading your applications!
